Website Maintenance Services: What's Included and What They Cost in 2026.

A website is software, and software needs looking after. Plugins release updates, security holes get found, forms quietly stop sending and domains come up for renewal. Website maintenance services take care of all that so the site keeps working and keeps bringing in inquiries.

This guide explains what website maintenance services include, what they usually do not, what they cost in 2026, and how to choose a provider. If you would rather do the work yourself, our website maintenance checklist lists every task by how often to do it.

What are website maintenance services?

Website maintenance services are the regular work that keeps a live website secure, fast and working: updates, backups, security checks, monitoring and small fixes. Most providers sell them as a monthly plan, so the work happens on a schedule instead of only when something breaks.

They matter most on WordPress, where you are responsible for updating WordPress itself, the theme and every plugin. Hosted builders like Shopify and Wix handle their own software updates, so those sites need less, but not nothing.

What a good maintenance service includes

These are the tasks to look for, and why each one matters.

Task How often Why it matters
Backups, stored off the server Daily or weekly A backup is the only undo button you have
Software updates (core, theme, plugins) Weekly to monthly Most hacked sites run outdated software
A backup before every update Every update So a bad update can be rolled back in minutes
Security scans Weekly Catch malware and known vulnerabilities early
Uptime monitoring Constant Someone hears about downtime before your customers do
Form tests Monthly Broken forms are the most common silent failure
Speed checks Monthly Slow pages lose visitors and rankings
SSL, domain and hosting renewals Yearly, with reminders A lapsed renewal can take the whole site offline
Small content changes On request Prices, hours and team members stay current
A monthly report Monthly You can see what was done, not just pay for it

What is usually not included

Read the plan carefully. These are normally extra:

  • Redesigns and new pages. Maintenance keeps the site you have healthy; it does not rebuild it.
  • New features, such as booking systems or a shop.
  • Content writing and SEO. Some plans include a few hours of edits, but ongoing SEO is a separate service.
  • Fixing a site that is already hacked or badly out of date. Most providers quote a one-off clean-up before the plan starts.
  • Premium plugin licenses, which are usually paid at cost.

How much do website maintenance services cost?

The honest answer is “it depends on what is included”, and published figures spread widely. GoDaddy’s 2026 guide, for example, puts maintenance for small to medium business sites at roughly $50 to $500 a month. Online stores, large sites and plans with lots of developer time cost more.

Providers charge in four main ways:

Pricing model How it works Good for
Monthly plan A fixed fee for a fixed list of tasks Most small businesses
Retainer A block of developer hours each month Sites that change often
Hourly Pay for each job as it comes up Simple sites with few plugins
Pay per fix A fee for each emergency Nobody, usually: it is the most expensive way to maintain a site

What moves the price:

  • Platform. A WordPress site with 30 plugins needs more care than a Shopify store.
  • Size and traffic. Stores and busy sites need more frequent backups and closer monitoring.
  • Response time. Four-hour replies cost more than next-business-day replies.
  • Included hours. Content changes and developer time are the biggest cost driver.

What we charge

Our care plans are deliberately simple. Care costs $19 a month and covers WordPress, theme and plugin updates, security scans, uptime monitoring, a monthly backup check and fixes if an update breaks something. Care Plus costs $39 a month and adds up to 2 hours of content changes, a monthly report and priority replies within 4 working hours. Not ready for a plan? One-off fixes are $15 an hour, agreed before we start. Both plans work on our hosting or yours.

Do you need a maintenance plan?

Your site What it needs
A WordPress site with plugins A monthly plan. Updates are your responsibility, and they are the main security risk
A WooCommerce store A monthly plan with frequent backups and checkout tests
A Shopify or Wix site Light care: app reviews, form tests, content updates. Often hourly is enough
A custom-coded static site Occasional checks and renewals. Hourly is usually enough
A site you rarely update and nobody watches A plan, before something breaks quietly

How to choose a website maintenance provider

Ask these questions before you sign up.

  1. What exactly happens each month? Ask for the task list in writing.
  2. Do you take a backup before every update? The answer should be yes.
  3. Where are backups stored, and have you tested a restore? A backup stored only on the same server is not enough.
  4. What happens if an update breaks my site? Fixing it should be included.
  5. How fast do you reply, and how? Email, WhatsApp, a ticket system? Within how many hours?
  6. Are content changes included? How many hours, and what does extra time cost?
  7. Will I get a report? Monthly, in plain language.
  8. Do I keep admin access and ownership? You should always be able to log in to your own site.
  9. Can I cancel? Look for a short notice period, not a long contract.
  10. Do you maintain sites you did not build? Good providers do, after an initial check.

Red flags

  • No clear list of what is included
  • “Unlimited changes” for a very low price, which usually means slow or skipped work
  • Long lock-in contracts
  • The provider keeps your logins, domain or hosting in their own name
  • No backups before updates

What happens when nobody maintains a website

It rarely breaks all at once. It goes like this: an update is skipped, then several. A plugin with a known security hole stays installed. The contact form stops sending after a hosting change, and nobody notices for weeks. The SSL certificate or domain renewal fails because the card on file expired. Then one day the site shows a warning, redirects to spam, or is simply gone.

Every one of those problems costs more to fix than it would have cost to prevent, and the lost inquiries never show up on an invoice. That is the real case for website maintenance services.

How our website maintenance services work

  1. We check the site first: updates, plugins, backups, security and forms. Anything urgent gets fixed first, with the cost agreed.
  2. Backups and monitoring start: backups on a schedule and an alert if the site goes down.
  3. Monthly care: we take a backup, update, test and check the site.
  4. Changes on request: send us what you need by email or WhatsApp.

Every site we build also comes with 30 days of free fixes after launch. See our website maintenance services for the full details, or compare plans on the pricing page. Still deciding whether to pay for help at all? Read web maintenance services vs doing it yourself.

FAQs

1. What do website maintenance services include?

At minimum: software updates, backups you can restore, security scans, uptime monitoring and checks that your forms still work. Better plans add content changes, speed checks and a monthly report.

2. How much do website maintenance services cost per month?

Most small business plans fall somewhere between $50 and $500 a month, depending on what is included. Online stores and large sites cost more. Our own plans start at $19 a month.

3. Do I need website maintenance if my site is on Shopify or Wix?

You need less of it. Shopify and Wix update their own software, so there are no plugin updates to run. You still need someone to check apps, forms, speed and content from time to time.

4. How often should a website be maintained?

Backups and security checks weekly or more often, software updates and form tests monthly, and a review of content, users and renewals every quarter and year.

5. Can I switch maintenance providers?

Yes, as long as you own your domain, hosting and logins. Before you switch, make sure you have a recent backup and admin access to everything.
