Local SEO for Service Businesses: Get Found by Nearby Customers.

When someone’s power goes out or they need a van for Saturday’s move, they search for “electrician near me” or “removals in [town]”. Local SEO decides whether they find you or your competitor.

We have built websites for electricians, removal companies, cleaners, security firms and craftsmen in Canada, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands. These are the things that consistently make the difference.

1. Complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is what appears in Google Maps and the local results at the top of the page. Make it complete:

  • The right primary category, the one that best describes your main service, plus relevant secondary ones.
  • Services, listed individually.
  • Service areas, if you travel to customers.
  • Opening hours, including holidays.
  • Real photos of your team, vehicles and work.
  • Your website link, pointing to the most relevant page.

Keep your business name exactly as it appears in real life. Google’s guidelines do not allow adding keywords to the name, and profiles that do can be suspended.

2. Keep your name, address and phone consistent

Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Inconsistent details make it harder for Google to trust which information is correct.

3. Create a page for every service

People search for the job, not your company: “fuse box replacement”, “house clearance”, “end of tenancy clean”. A single “Services” page cannot rank for all of them.

Give each main service its own page that explains what is involved, typical questions, what affects the price, and how to book. SMB Electrical in Toronto has a page for each electrical service for this reason.

4. Build area pages, carefully

If you serve several towns, pages for your main areas can help you appear beyond your own postcode. The key word is genuine. Write about the work you do there, the areas nearby and anything specific to that location.

Pages that are copies with only the town name changed are what Google calls doorway pages, and they can harm your rankings. A few strong area pages are better than fifty thin ones. MUT Umzug covers moves across Germany with this approach.

5. Earn reviews, and reply to them

Reviews influence both your ranking and whether people call you. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to every review, good or bad, politely and quickly.

Never buy reviews or post fake ones. It breaks Google’s policies and customers can often tell.

6. Add local structured data

Structured data, specifically the LocalBusiness schema, tells search engines exactly what your business is, where it operates, your opening hours and how to contact you. It is invisible to visitors but helps search engines understand you.

7. Make it easy to contact you on a phone

Most local searches happen on mobile. Every page should have:

  • A tap-to-call phone number.
  • A WhatsApp or messaging link, where your customers use it.
  • A short quote form: name, phone, what they need.
  • Fast loading on mobile data.

A visitor who struggles to contact you will simply go back and call the next result.

8. Show proof

Photos of real jobs, before-and-after projects, certifications, insurance details and reviews on your website all build the trust that turns a visitor into a call.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the same text on every area page.
  • Hiding the phone number in the footer.
  • A Google Business Profile that links to the homepage when a service page fits better.
  • Letting the website and profile show different opening hours or phone numbers.

How long does local SEO take?

Local searches are usually less competitive than national ones, so improvements often show sooner. See our realistic guide to how long SEO takes.

FAQs

1. Do I need a physical address for local SEO?

No. Service-area businesses can hide their address on Google Business Profile and list the areas they serve instead. You still need a genuine business location.

2. How many area pages should I create?

Only as many as you can write genuinely useful content for. A few strong pages for the areas you really serve beat dozens of near-identical copies.

3. Can I put keywords in my Google Business Profile name?

No. Google's guidelines say your business name should be your real-world name. Adding extra keywords can get your profile suspended.
