Most businesses know they should “do SEO”. Fewer know what SEO optimization services actually involve, what a fair price is, or how to tell a good provider from one that will send a report full of numbers and nothing else.

This guide explains what you get from SEO optimization services, what they cost in 2026, what results to expect and when, and the questions to ask before you hire anyone.

What are SEO optimization services?

SEO optimization services are the work that helps your website show up when people search Google for what you sell. In practice that means making sure Google can read your site, that you have a strong page for every search worth winning, and that people trust what they find.

The goal is not traffic for its own sake. It is more visitors who are ready to call, book or buy. A good provider measures success in inquiries and sales, not just rankings.

What’s included in SEO optimization services

Packages are named differently, but the work falls into the same groups. We explain each one in detail in types of search engine optimization services.

  • SEO audit. How Google sees your site today: what is indexed, what ranks, what is broken and what competitors do better.
  • Keyword research. The searches your customers make, how often, and which page should rank for each.
  • Technical SEO. Indexing errors, slow pages, broken links, redirects, sitemaps and structured data.
  • On-page SEO. Titles, descriptions, headings, internal links and the content on each page.
  • Content. New service pages, area pages and articles that answer the questions customers search for.
  • Local SEO. Your Google Business Profile, local pages, reviews and consistent business details.
  • Links. Earning mentions and links from relevant, trusted sites.
  • Reporting. What changed, what was done and what comes next, every month.

How much do SEO optimization services cost?

SEO prices vary more than almost any other marketing service. The best public data comes from Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers: the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000 a month, chosen by about 20% of respondents. Agencies tend to charge more than freelancers, and averages are pulled up by a minority of very expensive providers.

Providers price their work in four main ways:

Pricing model How it works Good for
Monthly retainer A fixed monthly fee for ongoing work Most businesses; SEO compounds over months
Project A fixed price for one job, such as an audit or a migration A one-off fix or a site move
Hourly Pay for time used Advice and small tasks
Local SEO plan A smaller monthly fee for one town or region Local service businesses

What drives the price:

  • Competition. “Plumber in a small town” is cheaper to win than “car insurance”.
  • Area. One city costs less than a whole country or several countries.
  • Content. Articles and new pages are a large part of the monthly cost.
  • Starting point. A site with serious technical problems needs more work up front.
  • Where the provider is based. Agency overheads in London or New York show up in the price.

What we charge

Our SEO plans start at $120 a month for one town or city, $180 for several cities or a region, and $250 for a whole country, plus a one-off setup of $100 for the audit, the first technical fixes and your Google accounts. The minimum is 3 months, then it is month to month. Two or four articles a month can be added. You can check your own estimate in our website cost calculator.

What results to expect, and when

Google is clear about this: in its guidance on hiring an SEO, it says it usually takes four months to a year to make improvements and see the benefit. We explain why in how long SEO takes.

Progress tends to show up in this order:

  1. Technical problems disappear from Search Console in the first weeks.
  2. Impressions rise: Google starts showing your pages for more searches.
  3. Rankings climb for the specific and local searches you targeted.
  4. Clicks follow, and then inquiries and sales.

Here is what that looked like for one of our clients. ABC Crane Hire in Perth has location pages for every area it covers and a blog with more than 140 articles. Over two months, Google Search Console showed the site 23.9K times in search results, with 93 clicks. For TVDM, a Perth marketing agency, impressions reached 7.87K over three months and kept climbing.

How to choose an SEO provider: 10 questions

  1. What will you do in the first three months? Expect a concrete plan, not “we will optimize your site”.
  2. Which searches will you target first, and why? Good providers start with searches you can realistically win.
  3. How will you measure success? Inquiries and sales from search, not only rankings.
  4. Can I see results for a client like me? Ideally with Search Console screenshots.
  5. Who does the work? Is it the person you are talking to, a junior team or a subcontractor?
  6. How do you get links? Listen for directories, partners and content worth citing, not bought links.
  7. Will I keep access to my own data? Search Console, Analytics and your Google Business Profile should be in your name.
  8. What do you need from me? Good SEO usually needs your input on services, customers and photos.
  9. How long is the contract? A short minimum, then month to month, is a good sign.
  10. What happens to the work if I leave? Pages and fixes should stay on your site.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed first place on Google. Google itself warns that nobody can guarantee a number one ranking.
  • Secret methods. Good SEO is not secret. A provider should be able to explain what they do.
  • Cheap link packages. “500 backlinks for $50” breaks Google’s spam policies and can get your site penalized.
  • No access to your own accounts. If the provider owns your Search Console or Business Profile, you cannot leave easily.
  • Reports full of vanity numbers. Thousands of impressions mean nothing if no one calls.
  • Long lock-in contracts with no way out if nothing improves.

DIY, freelancer or agency?

Do it yourself Freelancer SEO agency
Cost Your time Lower Higher
Skills What you learn Usually one or two specialties Technical, content, local and reporting
Time from you High Medium Low
Best for Very small local businesses with time Focused tasks, such as an audit Businesses that want ongoing growth from search

If you only do one thing yourself, make it this: complete your Google Business Profile and make sure every service you sell has its own page. Our guide to local SEO for service businesses walks through both.

How our SEO optimization services work

We start with an audit of how Google sees your site, then pick the searches worth winning first, usually local and specific ones. We fix the technical problems, improve your existing pages, write the ones you are missing, set up your Google Business Profile, and send you a report every month with what changed and what we do next.

You keep every account in your own name, and there are no secret methods. See the full details on our SEO optimization services page. 2. How much do SEO optimization services cost?

5. What should a monthly SEO report include?

Clicks and impressions from Google Search Console, rankings for the searches that matter, inquiries or sales from search, what was done that month and what comes next.
