WordPress vs Custom-Coded Website: Which Is Right for You?
WordPress powers a huge share of the web, and most of the websites we build run on it. Some of our projects, though, are custom-coded from scratch. Neither is “better”. They suit different businesses, and choosing the wrong one costs time and money later.
Here is how we help clients decide.
What each option actually means
WordPress is a content management system (CMS). Your website runs on WordPress, with a theme for the design and plugins for features. Your team logs into a dashboard to edit pages, publish posts and add products.
Custom-coded means the website is written specifically for you, often as a lightweight site built with modern tools and deployed on fast hosting. There is no general-purpose CMS underneath unless we add one.
Choose WordPress when…
- Your team will update the site often. Adding pages, blog posts, jobs, events or products from a dashboard is WordPress’s biggest strength.
- You need common features quickly. Contact forms, online stores with WooCommerce, bookings and multi-language content all have mature, well-supported plugins.
- You want flexibility on who maintains it. WordPress is so widely used that finding someone to help later is easy.

Choose custom code when…
- Speed is a top priority. A custom site ships only what each page needs, which makes it very fast.
- The site does something specific. Calculators, tools, platforms and unusual interactions are often simpler to build directly than to force into plugins. Our work on Infinite Calculators is a good example.
- Content changes rarely, or a developer handles it. Without a dashboard, edits go through a developer, unless a CMS is added.
- You want fewer moving parts. No plugins means no plugin updates and a smaller attack surface.

How they compare
Editing
WordPress wins for non-technical teams. A custom site can match it only if a CMS is added, which adds cost.
Speed
Custom code has the edge out of the box. WordPress can be fast with good hosting, caching, optimised images and restraint with plugins.
Security
Both can be secure. WordPress sites need regular updates to core, themes and plugins; most WordPress hacks come from outdated or poorly made plugins. Custom sites have fewer third-party parts to patch. See our maintenance checklist.
SEO
Both can rank well. What matters is structure, content, speed and technical setup, not the platform. WordPress makes on-page SEO easy for editors through plugins such as Yoast or Rank Math.
Cost over time
WordPress is often quicker to build and cheaper to change, but has ongoing plugin licences and maintenance. Custom code can cost more to build and to change, but less to keep running.
A simple way to decide
Ask three questions:
- How often will we change the content, and who will do it? Often, and by us: WordPress.
- Does the site need unusual features? Yes: consider custom code.
- How important is raw speed compared with easy editing? Speed first with rare edits: custom code.

1. Is WordPress good for SEO?
Yes. With a well-built theme and an SEO plugin such as Yoast or Rank Math, WordPress gives you full control over titles, descriptions, URLs, sitemaps and structured data.
2. Is a custom-coded website faster than WordPress?
Usually, because it only loads what the page needs. A carefully built WordPress site can still be fast; the slow ones are usually overloaded with plugins and page-builder bloat.
3. Can I move from WordPress to custom code later?
Yes. Your content can be exported and moved. Plan redirects from old URLs to new ones so you keep your search rankings.
