Website Developers in Australia: Costs, Options and How to Hire One in 2026.

If you search for website developers in Australia, you get pages of agencies in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, a long list of freelancers, and quotes that range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands. It is hard to tell what a fair price is, or what you actually get for it.

This guide explains what website developers in Australia charge in 2026, how a local agency compares with a freelancer and an offshore team, what an Australian business website needs to get right, and the questions to ask before you hire anyone. We are a web development company in Islamabad with four live Australian client sites, so we will be open about where an offshore team fits and where it does not.

What do website developers in Australia charge?

Prices vary widely, and most published price guides are written by agencies that sell websites, so treat any single figure with care. Across the Australian guides published for 2026, these are the typical ranges for a small business:

Option Typical price for a small business site What you usually get
Freelancer about A$1,500 to A$5,000 One person, often working from a template
Small or mid-size Australian agency about A$3,000 to A$10,000 A team: design, build, basic SEO, launch
Custom build from a larger agency about A$15,000 to A$45,000 Strategy, custom design, copywriting, integrations
Online store (Shopify or WooCommerce) from about A$8,000 Product setup, payments, shipping

On top of the build, expect ongoing costs. Hosting can be anything from about A$60 to A$1,000 a year depending on the site, a .com.au domain costs roughly A$15 to A$30 a year, and agency care plans often run from about A$100 to A$600 a month.

What drives the price is the same everywhere:

  • Number of pages and templates. Five pages cost less than thirty.
  • Design. A layout adapted to your brand costs less than a fully custom design.
  • Content. Writing and photography add cost if the developer provides them.
  • Features. Booking, payments, member areas and integrations take longer to build and test.
  • Where the team is based. An agency paying Sydney rents and salaries has to charge Sydney rates.

That last point is why many Australian businesses now look at remote teams. Our own business websites start at US$200 for 5 pages and online stores at US$500, because running a team in Islamabad costs less. The full list is on our pricing page, and our website cost calculator gives you an instant estimate.

Local agency, freelancer or offshore team?

Each option is right for a different kind of business. Here is how they compare.

Local Australian agency Freelancer Offshore web development team
Cost Highest Lowest Low to middle
Who does the work A team One person A team
Face-to-face meetings Yes Sometimes Video calls
If someone is sick or leaves Someone else takes over Work stops Someone else takes over
Working hours Same as yours Varies Partial overlap, plus overnight progress
Best for Large budgets that value in-person meetings Small, simple sites and quick fixes Growing businesses that want agency quality at a lower price

When a local agency makes sense

If you want to meet in person, need a large custom build with workshops and ongoing strategy, or work in a regulated industry where you want a local firm on the contract, a local agency is worth the premium.

When a freelancer makes sense

A good freelancer is fine for a landing page, a small brochure site or fixes to an existing site. The risk is that everything depends on one person. If they get busy or move on, your support goes with them.

When an offshore team makes sense

A remote team works well when you want a team rather than one person, a clear process, and a price closer to a freelancer’s. Almost every web project runs on video calls, shared files and a staging link anyway, even with a local agency. The things that matter are communication, a portfolio you can check, and working hours that overlap with yours.

Time zones: how working with an offshore team actually feels

Distance matters less than the clock. This is how Australian cities line up with Islamabad, where our team works (Pakistan does not change its clocks).

City Ahead of Islamabad What it means
Perth 3 hours, all year Your afternoon is our morning
Darwin 4.5 hours, all year Late-morning and afternoon calls
Adelaide 4.5 hours in winter, 5.5 in summer Afternoon calls
Brisbane 5 hours, all year Afternoon calls, overnight progress
Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart 5 hours in winter, 6 in summer Afternoon calls, overnight progress

In practice, you send feedback during your day, we pick it up in our morning, and there is a call window in your afternoon. For east coast clients, a good part of the work happens while you sleep.

What an Australian business website needs to get right

Wherever your developer is, these are the Australian details a good one will raise with you. This is general information, not legal advice, so check anything specific to your business with your adviser.

  • A .com.au domain in your name. auDA rules require the registrant to have an Australian presence, such as an ABN or ACN. The developer can do the setup, but the domain must belong to your business.
  • A privacy policy. The Privacy Act 1988 covers businesses with an annual turnover over A$3 million, plus some smaller ones, such as health service providers. Even if you are exempt, tools like Google Analytics require you to tell visitors you use them, and customers expect a policy.
  • Consent for marketing emails. Under the Spam Act 2003, newsletter and marketing sign-ups need consent, must identify you, and must include an easy way to unsubscribe.
  • Prices shown in full. If you sell to consumers, the total price, including GST and unavoidable fees, has to be shown prominently. Your refund policy cannot take away the consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law.
  • Accessibility. The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 applies to services delivered online, and WCAG 2.2 level AA is the practical standard to aim for: readable contrast, alt text, labeled forms and keyboard-friendly navigation.
  • Fast hosting for Australian visitors. Choose hosting with servers in or near Australia, or a CDN, so pages load quickly in Perth and Sydney alike.

Getting found in your suburbs

Australians search with place names: “crane hire Rockingham”, “accountant Parramatta”, “electrician near me”. A website that ranks locally needs:

  1. A page for every service you sell, with the details customers ask about.
  2. A page for each suburb or region you really serve, with local information, not the same text with the town name swapped.
  3. A complete Google Business Profile that matches your website.
  4. Local structured data, so Google knows where you work.

This is the approach we took for ABC Crane Hire in Perth: a WordPress site with location pages for Perth, Rockingham and Mandurah and a blog with more than 140 articles. In two months, Google Search Console showed the site 23.9K times in search, with 93 clicks. Our guide to local SEO for service businesses covers the method step by step.

10 questions to ask before you hire website developers in Australia

  1. Can I see live websites you built for Australian businesses? Open them on your phone and check how fast they load.
  2. Who will actually do the work, and where are they? Some agencies resell work done elsewhere without telling you.
  3. What exactly is in the quote, and is GST included? Get the pages, features, revisions and launch tasks in writing.
  4. Will the domain, hosting and code be in my name? They should be, once the project is paid.
  5. Will you register my .com.au domain to my business? Not to the developer.
  6. When can we talk? Agree the call window and how fast messages get answered.
  7. What SEO is included at launch? At least titles, descriptions, headings, a sitemap, structured data and fast pages.
  8. Can I update the site myself? Ask to see the admin area before you agree.
  9. What happens after launch? Ask about bug fixes, updates, backups and the monthly cost of support.
  10. How are payments structured? Payments in stages protect both sides.

Red flags

  • No live websites to show, or only template demos
  • A price far below everyone else’s, with no explanation
  • Promises of “guaranteed number one on Google”
  • The domain or hosting registered in the developer’s name
  • No written scope or contract

How we work with Australian businesses

We have built four websites for Australian clients so far:

  • Prime Strategies Group: a WordPress site for a business advisory firm in Perth and the Peel region, set up to rank for business consulting searches.
  • ABC Crane Hire: location pages and a large blog for crane hire across Perth and Peel.
  • TVDM: a 36-page website for a Perth digital marketing agency, built around a free audit offer.
  • BOTL: a custom Shopify theme for Australian-made fragrance, which took 22 orders in just over four months.

You get a fixed quote in writing, two rounds of design changes, 30 days of free fixes after launch, and every login and file. After launch, the same team can keep you climbing with SEO optimization services and look after the site with website maintenance services from $19 a month.

FAQs

1. How much does a website cost in Australia?

Australian agency price guides for 2026 mostly put a professional small business website at roughly A$3,000 to A$10,000, with freelancers lower and custom builds or online stores higher. Remote teams outside Australia often charge a fraction of that for the same scope.

2. Is it safe to hire website developers outside Australia?

It can be, if you check the same things you would check locally: live websites they have built for Australian clients, a written fixed quote, payments in stages, and a contract that says you own the domain, hosting and code.

3. Do I need a local web developer to rank in my city?

No. Rankings depend on your pages, your Google Business Profile, reviews and links, not on where your developer sits. What matters is that they build suburb and service pages and understand how Australians search.

4. Can an overseas developer register my .com.au domain?

They can do the work, but the domain must be registered to you. auDA rules require the registrant to have an Australian presence, such as an ABN or ACN, so the domain stays in your business's name.

5. How long does it take to build a business website?

A simple business website usually takes one to three weeks once the content is ready, and an online store two to three weeks. Large or custom builds take longer. Slow feedback and missing content are the most common causes of delay.
